SmugMug alternative with plan, fee and trial facts (October 2026)

Facts as of October 22, 2026, taken only from each company's own pricing and help pages. Prices change, so check the source before you decide.
This page lists published plan facts for SmugMug next to Pixiproof's pay-per-gallery and Studio options. It does not rank them. SmugMug prices are the US dollar amounts shown in the default view of its plans page [1].
SmugMug plans, as published
SmugMug lists three self-serve plans and an Enterprise plan [1]. The plans page shows annual-billing rates as a monthly figure [1]:
- Direct: $20.00/month, billed annually [1].
- Portfolio: $23.50/month, billed annually [1].
- Pro: $37.00/month, billed annually [1].
- Enterprise: a tailor-made plan for studios, teams and institutions. No price is published; the page asks you to reach out [1].
Monthly billing is also offered. You choose monthly or annual payment when you subscribe, and the subscription renews automatically. SmugMug's help center says subscriptions are charged in USD [2].
All three plans include unlimited full-resolution JPEG storage, digital delivery, client galleries for review or download, private galleries, QR codes for quick delivery, Lightroom integration, upload from Flickr and Dropbox, and 24/7 live support [1]. RAW files are not part of the plan. They go into the SmugMug Source add-on: $10/month for up to 1 TB, then $6/month for each additional TB [1].
On Direct, the print lab integrations and the checkout are marked "Not for profit" in the plans grid, and website templates and watermark tools are not included [1].
Portfolio adds print and digital download sales, full-service order fulfillment, watermark and theft protection tools, website templates, a custom domain, credit card and PayPal payments, automatic tax collection and receipts, proof delay options and sales statistics [1].
Pro adds multiple custom pricelists, photo packages, a coupon creator, client favoriting, full control over client downloads, branded packaging and thank-you notes for print sales, and access for an assistant or second shooter [1].
Selling fees and the free trial
Selling requires a Portfolio or Pro plan [3]. On a print, your profit is 85% of the difference between the price you set and SmugMug's default print price. On a download, it is 85% of what you charge above the download base cost. SmugMug keeps the other 15%, and its help center says that share includes credit card payment fees, customer service and the cost of running the program [3]. The plans grid lists credit card processing fees as "None" on Portfolio and Pro [1].
SmugMug's own example: a 5x7 print sold for US$10.79 with a default price of US$0.79 has a US$10.00 markup, and you keep US$8.50 [3].
Profits are paid automatically the following month once you have at least US$500 unpaid. Below that, you can request a payment from US$5, or US$10 for international sellers. US sellers are paid by ACH and international sellers by PayPal [3].
The free trial lasts 14 days [1][2]. During the trial your site stays completely private and image or gallery sharing isn't available. You can extend the trial for a few extra days [2]. The plans page lists no free plan [1].
